The DMACC men’s basketball team started the 2018-19 season with a statement win over William Penn JV, winning by a score of 116-48 Wednesday night. The Bears had six players in double digits, and led by 34 points at halftime.
Sophomore Zaire Swaby led the Bears with 22 points on 7 of 9 shooting and a perfect 7 for 7 from the line. The 6 foot 8 inch Swaby also chipped in 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, doing his job to protect the paint.
Other Bears with double digit scoring were sophomore Ray Miller (17pts, 9 reb, 8ast, 3blk, 3stl), sophomore Devonta Prince (15 pts, 7 reb, 3ast, 2 blk), sophomore Dyllan Robinson (11pts, 7 reb, 5ast), sophomore Theron Sanders (16pts, 2reb),, and freshman Zach Lester (13pts, 4reb, 4 blk). Lester was second in the state last year with 30 ppg in high school for Clear Lake.
Miller was constantly active on both ends of the court, almost recording a triple double and playing the most minutes of any Bear. “My role is keep everybody together, bring the energy as much as I can, and be everywhere. Coach [Bowler] gave me a special [job] this year to crash the boards. He knows my athleticism.”
Other Bears to play were sophomore Quinton Taylor (7pts, 10reb, 2blk), freshman Rashon Ivory (5pts, 5reb, 11ast) freshman Tray Buchanan (9pts, 2ast), and freshman Makai Muhammad (2pts, 1reb).
The Bears open the season as the team just outside the Top 20 rankings in DII junior college basketball, leading in the ‘Others Receiving Votes’ category. Iowa colleges in the Top 20 are #5 Kirkland, #6 Southwestern, and #20 Iowa Lakes. Head coach John Bowler said about this team “they bring a level of toughness we potentially haven’t had in a few years.”
Miller, as a returning starter, had this to say about the upcoming season “This year, we’ve all bought in [to Coach Bowler’s system], we all love each other like brothers, this year’s going to be different.”
