Some DMACC Ankeny services and operations have been temporarily moved as mold is remediated in Building 6.
The Testing Center is currently being remediated, with the music rooms planned to follow. Public Safety, the Emergency Operations Center, Academic Achievement, Strive Academy, Iowa Communications Network Classrooms, and the library make up the remaining schedule.
During a routine air quality test in April, an area in Building 6 was discovered to have higher levels of common mold. After several tests, a third party deemed it enough of a concern to clean the entire building. The cause is still unknown, however. All other buildings at the Ankeny campus have been found clear of any traces of mold.
Since the recommendation, DMACC contacted several cleaning companies before Clean Air, and Enviro-Services jumped out as the top candidate. They began the remediation process in June, starting with the most affected areas.
Keith Golly, Mechanical and Electrical Supervisor at DMACC, has been overseeing the project and said, “Everyone has been wonderful to work with; people are very accommodating, and everyone has been very good in changing things around.”
From the Testing Center to the library, computer lab, classrooms, and more, Building 6 includes dozens of different operations. Golly says this has made it an incredibly diverse project, which makes the end date hard to predict.
January is the target date for the project’s completion; however, it could get done sooner or later depending on the ability to get to the HVAC ductwork in each area.
“It is impossible to tell if another building could have the same problem,” Golly said. “The nature of managing a facility like this is to do normal upkeep. This is part of it, and there is a 0-100% chance of it happening again.”
Students can stay up to date regarding other changes through Campus Communication emails. Those most affected by the changes will receive separate communication in advance.
During the process, in-person support has been relocated to Building 5 in Room 1215, with modified hours of Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Phone support is not affected and is available during regular hours of Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
