Netflix’s On My Block gives characters difficult choices

How do you explain to everyone how you feel on the inside, or what’s running through your head?  Especially to your family, your caregiver, your one true love, or your ride or dies?

This is the dilemma we see Cesar facing in the show “On My Block.”  Cesar is just a 14-year-old kid who struggles to keep everyone in his life content.  His brother wants him to follow the family legacy by joining the Santos gang; His true love, Monse, wants him to ignore that legacy, and better himself by opening up to her; his friends, Jamal and Ruby, only want him to succeed despite the odds that are stacked against him (living in an urban area of LA.)

As he joining the Santos gang, Cesar faces many obstacles, which lead him to lose himself mentally, physically and emotionally.  When he is told by his brother, the one who raised and cared for him, to kill a member of the opposite gang, he is forced to choose between listening to his blood, or listening to his heart.

As his friends accompany him on this journey, they too face obstacles of their own.

Monse struggles to face her mother, who  abandoned her when she was young; Jamal is looking for a treasure that was lost many years ago, which if he finds, will make him rich beyond his wildest dreams, while Ruby, who is an intellectual kid, just wants the girl he likes to like him back.

As these four kids face their challenges and help each other, they give us an example of what it is to truly be a “ride or die” friend.

If you’re looking for a show that will not only touch your heart but will also give you a reality check on what life is like for some kids out there, then this show is definitely for you.
