Where one story ends, another one begins

derrickAbout nine months ago today, I started a new chapter in my life and moved away from home to start college.

I left home with the aspirations of doing something in my life that mattered and something that I could look back on and be proud of. I spent most of my years in school just going day-by-day and never really branched out. In college, I wanted to change that. I wanted to branch out with confidence. I wanted to make a name for myself.

Throughout the fall semester, I found and realized my enjoyment of writing in a composition class here at DMACC. There was no denying the talent, potential, and desire that I had and still have to this day. Upon reading an article in The Campus Chronicle, I found that they were looking for writers to join the staff. I saw this as my opportunity to branch out. About half-way into the school year, I anxiously sent out an email to The Chronicle about my interest in joining the staff and about a week later, I was sitting in on a meeting in the newsroom.

Upon joining the staff, I made a commitment to myself that I would take this opportunity to work hard and learn to the best of my ability to enhance my writing skills. I began to come up with story ideas and opinions that I was passionate about. I covered stories and investigated. I talked to people that I would never thought I would’ve talked to before, I learned more about writing and journalism, and I gained so many new experiences. I am grateful for The Campus Chronicle giving me an opportunity to learn, grow, and accomplish my goals.

For those of you who are just going through the motions, find something and get involved. This is college. This is the chance to make something of yourself, to build your résumé, and gain life experiences. Maybe it involves joining an intramural sports team, maybe it’s joining a club, or maybe it’s joining the school newspaper. Whatever it is, branch out and do it with no regrets. Because now is the time to do so.
