West campus kicks of CI! Week

Actor John de Lancie played “Q” on Star Trek and will be speaking at the DMACC West Campus Thursday, March 10 at 11 a.m. It will also be live-streamed.

DMACC’s West Campus will be hosting this year’s Celebrate! Innovation Week (ci!Week) March 9-10. The event is free to watch streamed on Youtube, Facebook, and e360tv. In-person seating for the event is also free, but restricted on a first-come, first served basis. Speakers this year include John de Lance, Jazzy Ellis, George Ducas, and Talithia Williams.

As stated on their website, Celebrate! Innovation Live is a conference that gives the community opportunities to connect with accomplished people in a variety of industries and life paths. This event features interactive exhibits that aim to inspire creativity and logical thinking through videos, photographs, charts, and more.

During this event, speakers include actor John de Lancie, who played “Q” on Star Trek, Star Trek’s technical consultant Dr. Erin MacDonald, award-winning stunt actor Jazzy Ellis, among others. Presentations start at 9 a.m. and each speaker has a one hour time slot. There is a half hour long intermission at noon and presentations finish by 1:30 p.m.

“All of our presenters bring something different to the table and different presenters will appeal to different people. Personally, I’m looking forward to all of them because of those differences. All of our presenters over the years have been incredibly interesting and inspiring,” said Provost Anthony Paustian. Paustian also stated that there will be a new theme song and music video this year, created by George Ducas.

In previous years, speakers have included Steve Wozniak, Randi Zuckerberg, LeVar Burton, the cast of Napoleon Dynamite, and Grant Imahara. Many astronauts have also attended, such as Alan Bean, Gene Cernan, and Walt Cunningham.

This year ci!Live has partnered with Court Avenue Brewing Co. to host an art contest. The objective of this contest is to ci!Live themed labels. Submissions closed Feb. 13 and the top three submissions will receive a cash prize. Root beer label submissions are open for anyone over 18 and under 18 with parents permission. Beer label submissions are open for anyone over 21. The winners artwork will be displayed on the ci!Live website and the top six finalists for each label will be revealed at an award ceremony.

More information about the event can be found on the ci!Week website. Past presentations are also available to watch on their website.
