DMACC hosted a transfer fair on March 10 in Building 5 and had many colleges across Iowa and even Minnesota, South Dakota, Arizona, and Kansas come to talk to DMACC students. Many schools had pitches and offered information for DMACC students searching for schools to transfer to and undecided on what their future looks like.
University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA)
Associate Director Jennifer Timmons said DMACC classes transfer well with the first two years already completed and students being prepared very well. Her favorite thing about the school is the uniqueness of the different types of things you can do (like sports or reading).
Online Advisor Mollie Willis said if you would like to stay in the area or move away, they offer a degree program for anyone, whether in Iowa City or not. Her favorite thing about the school is that as an online student, you can still be in many clubs and organizations, and you’re still part of the Iowa community even as an online Hawkeye.
Clarke University (Dubuque, IA)
Transfer Admissions Counselor Daija Bates said if you’re looking to get away but still be kind of close to home as well as being close to Illinois and Wisconsin, Clarke is the choice for you. It’s a different experience with many sports and majors to choose from. They have many graduate programs, and you can save money and go to graduate school. Her favorite thing about the school is how close everything is, and you can know everyone in Dubuque and at the school.
Wartburg College (Waverly, IA)
Director of Admissions Natalie Smith said transferring is seamless. Wartburg gives you a different experience, and every student that visits gets a $1K scholarship. Her favorite thing about the school is working in admissions, watching students grow and meet their potential, and seeing them have so many different opportunities when graduating.
Ottawa University (KS/AZ/WI/ONLINE)
Community Development Executive Keslyn Copas said the classes are 100% online. Ottawa has accelerated courses and is very student eccentric. The students can ‘have their hand held’ through everything or be on their own. You can be anywhere in the world and are offered a lot of help through everything. Her favorite thing about the school is Gibby the Otter (mascot).
Grandview University (Des Moines, IA)
Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions Autumn Luce said that once you transfer, you’re part of the family. You can get connected with teachers and students easily. Students can choose their experience with quiet and calmness on campus or branch out and do stuff in Des Moines or other places. ‘Small Town vs. Big City’ feel. Her favorite thing about the school is that professors are invested in the students, and connections within the same majors happen organically between students.
Northern State University (Aberdeen, SD)
Admissions Counselor Kenissa Rose said Northern State is one of the top education programs in SD for teaching and music. Online is great. Students get the same tuition price as SD resident students. Great equivalence for credits and most credits will transfer, and you will have a lot when you arrive. It is a pretty small university in Aberdeen, with the student to faculty ratio being 19:1. Her favorite thing about the school is the very personal education with student-led research. She attended, and she says there are lots of opportunities.
Cornell College (Mount Vernon, IA)
Director of Admissions and Transfer Coordinator Sharon Grice said the most unique thing is the block plan where you take one class at a time in 18 days. You will still get done in the same amount of time as if you took any other course. Her favorite thing about the school is the diversity, with 42 states represented and many students of color.
Buena Vista University (Storm Lake, IA)
Admissions Counselor and Assistant Golf Coach Annika Powell said there are many academic and extracurricular activities. There are lots of opportunities to choose from and build their p. Her favorite thing about the school is the very unique campus location and how you can do things like kayaking or canoeing.
Mercy College (Des Moines, IA)
Admissions Counselor Jessica Arterburn said Mercy is a health and science college. It has healthcare focuses, even in math. Related to a future in healthcare. Her favorite thing about the school is the hands-on experience and not just sitting trying to learn but actually applying your skills. It’s a small school and is more focused on individual support. You can get more involved, and the teacher gets to know you well.
Simpson College (Indianola, IA)
Assistant Director of Admissions Marc Gentzler said the school has the 100K promise, where if your household income is lower than $100,000, you can get $11,000 a year that covers room and board. They have 100+ majors and minors to choose from. Class sizes are about 18-20 students. They have 25 sports teams. His favorite thing about the school is how tight the community is and how the professors ensure students get the best experience possible.
Dubuque University (Dubuque, IA)
Associate Dean of Graduate/Transfer Admission Melissa Gunnelson said Dubuque is a small private school that focuses on students’ growth as a person. It offers strong programs in aviation, business, education, nursing, sciences, and more. Her favorite thing about the school is the friendly atmosphere and welcoming staff.
Des Moines University (West Des Moines, IA)
Recruitment and Admissions Specialist Tricia Geelan said Des Moines University is a health sciences college. The demand for jobs is high in the field. The college helps take it to the next level. Her favorite thing about the school is the really great community atmosphere and the very collaborative aspect, as well as being together.
Upper Iowa University (West Des Moines, IA)
Enrollment Coordinator Valerie Isenberg said the flexibility in general and the timing is really good. There is a wide selection of majors. You can be 100% online or study on campus as well. There is a transfer scholarship. Upper Iowa is the only D-II sports school in Iowa. Her favorite thing about the school is the 8-week courses compared to other college courses.
University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls, IA)
Student Success Specialist Jakob Jehn said UNI is the most affordable public school in Iowa, with a third of students being transfers. They have a very friendly transfer. His favorite thing about the school is the regional university with a large number of resources but a small school overall. It is a very good middle ground.
Palmer University (Davenport, IA)
Admissions Counselor Kelley Vankuelen said Palmer has a good academic preparation and best foundation of encouragement with a good start up. Her favorite thing about the school is how it educates students to be in the healthcare industry. Students can help people with chronic pain without drugs or surgery in a more conservative model.
Iowa State University (Ames, IA)
Program Specialist Katie Mott said a third of transfer students are from DMACC, so you will be in good company. You can be as far or as short from home as you want. It is a great campus experience, inside and out. There are 800+ clubs and organizations available. Her favorite thing about the school is that ISU is a good fit for a variety of different students. ISU can be as big or as small as you make it, and you can make a big university feel small and like home. DMACC students have a lot of opportunities, and they can not only survive but thrive there as well. Transfers can prepare students well for their next steps in their career and lives.
Northwestern Health Sciences University (Bloomington, MN)
Senior Admissions Counselor Kelsey Jackley-Allen said if you’re looking for a medical school, Northwestern is the place for you. “If you want to do anything in healthcare, come to us.” It is the only bachelor program specialized for dentists/medical. Her favorite thing about the school is that the community has a family feel between students and professors.
William Penn University (Oskaloosa, IA)
Will Utter [Admissions] loves transfer fairs for students for them to see different colleges and talk to anyone and everyone. They can get out of their box and get information. Fairs also help other school reps as well. His favorite thing about the school is the professors with life outside the classroom, and they are very down to Earth.
Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, AZ)
Academic Advisor Mindy Johannsen said it’s tough for students with so many choices, and it can be very overwhelming. She encouraged students to ask lots of questions and take time to learn about what’s available. Her favorite thing about the school is how it’s very student-centered, while other colleges can be stricter. She said Grand Canyon is “What best serves students”.
Grinnell College (Grinnell, IA)
Senior Admissions Counselor Christian Morris said there are many research opportunities, and this research is required for students in all departments. For hands-on research, students need to receive an A+ in order to graduate. You can stay off campus. There is a $3 billion endowment.
Drake University (Des Moines, IA)
Associate Director of Transfer Admissions Rachelle Setsodi said, “Be a Bulldog.” There are over 150 majors to choose from with many student opportunities. Drake has a 97% placement rate and has a lot of internships for students.
Central College (Pella, IA)
Assistant Director of Admission Drew Sikkink said Central provides students with many opportunities. The class sizes are smaller and average about 17 students. There are closer relationships between professors and students. There are many internships students can get in Pella or Des Moines. His favorite thing about the school is the community. He likes how supportive the professors are and how supportive students are of each other. There are lots of different ways to be involved in the community or with each other.
