Computer science professor Bullard to retire

One of DMACC’s esteemed faculty is retiring at the end of the semester. Rodd Bullard, who teaches database classes in the IT department, has a long and proud career of more than 30 years in software development. Bullard said he plans to enjoy golf and watching Iowa athletics in his retirement. He loves watching Iowa athletics and enjoys golfing which he will do plenty of after retirement.

Before coming to DMACC, Bullard worked for a startup company out of the San Francisco area for 25 years. He became a professor at DMACC in 2011.

He worked on the Banner team — the software used by the administration for daily tasks at the school. Basically, he is one of the people who gave us the Degreeworks program the students of DMACC use to this day.

He joined the faculty full-time in 2013. But why retire if he was only here at DMACC for just 10 years? Well, Bullard said he feels it’s time to. That and he “hit the early retirement requirements here at DMACC.”

“I’ve really enjoyed this job. It’s been very rewarding,” he added. Bullard said he takes great pride in the accomplishments of his career, both in and out of his time at DMACC.

Another project that Bullard was a part of was a program to teach the little kids in the Early Childhood area in Building 9. The kids were taught basic programming skills. The application they made was a bear running around the court anytime a score was made.

Bullard said, “I just think DMACC is a great place to work. I think it’s a great place for students to start their education, or I guess, continue it from high school before they maybe get to a four-year school. We’re seeing a lot of jobs out there that people don’t need four-year degrees for so why not come to DMACC, save a little money?”

Bullard has had an accomplished career both here at DMACC and elsewhere in the software development field. He will be missed by his students, and we wish him a happy retirement.
