Wig and Pen Review

Wig and Pen is an English-style restaurant in Ankeny on South Ankeny Boulevard. It has won several awards for its pizza, but does have other items, such as sandwiches, salads, and a variety of pastas.

I ate at Wig and Pen on a Friday afternoon around 4:30. The restaurant was only about half full when I arrived. I had never been there before, but had heard very good things. The restaurant had a good atmosphere. It was an intimate setting with English décor. The restaurant had plenty of TVs, which were playing sports. TVs seemed to be viewable from the majority of the tables. There was a large bar with a lot of seating, along with a variety of beers on tap. Overall, it was reasonably priced, maybe a little on the more expensive side, but manageable. There were four people in my party. There was no waiting when we arrived, we were greeted quickly and showed to a table. The waitress was friendly enough, not overly talkative, but efficient. Our drinks arrived and we ordered a large flying tomato pizza with pepperoni and sausage. The flying tomato is a style of crust original to Wig and Pen and comes with sauce, cheese, and slices of fresh tomatoes on top. I would describe the crust as being deep dish. The crust was flakey, buttery and crispy. The crust was the high point of the pizza. There was a decent amount of pepperoni on the pizza,

The crust was flakey, buttery and crispy. The crust was the high point of the pizza. There was a decent amount of pepperoni on the pizza, however the sausages were scarce. It also had an abundance of cheese, almost too much cheese. I was very hungry while waiting for the pizza to arrive. The finished product was hearty; It only took a piece and a half to fill me up.

Once we ordered, I started a stopwatch to see how long the pizza would take. Another pizza on the menu gave a warning that it could take upwards of 40 minutes for the pizza to be out, but the pizza we ordered had no such warning. From ordering to the pizza arriving at our table, it took over 40 minutes. The waitress blamed the long wait on the large number of to-go’s the restaurant had at that time. I did notice the tables around us got their food more quickly, but they had ordered individual meals- no pizzas. Appetizers and side salads were also delivered quickly to the tables. When we were done, the waitress boxed up our leftovers and we were on our way.

Overall, the pizza, atmosphere, and service was good. I would not recommend this place if you are looking for a quick slice of pizza because it will be anything but quick. I am glad I tried Wig and Pen but do not think I will be heading back anytime soon.
