Construction in the Building 5 Rec Center, recently named Trail Point Aquatics and Wellness, is well underway and being overseen by Bill Blunck, the center’s operation direction. Trail Point is expected to be open in early spring of 2017.
The recreation center has been under construction since May of 2015 and has been partnered with Trail Point since July 2016 after a falling-out with the Greater Des Moines YMCA. The goal for the center, along with most of Building 5, is to provide Des Moines Area Community College students with more on-campus opportunities and a place to better every aspect of their lives, according to DMACC President Rob Denson in a past interview with The Chronicle.
Bill Blunck, Iowa State graduate and Trail Point director, is the leading man in this operation.
“I want to provide an experience that’ll give something to everybody,” said Blunck of what he hopes the new rec center will bring to not only the DMACC campus, but also to the Ankeny community as a whole.
Membership for DMACC students taking more than six credit hours is free, while individual membership is $55 and family membership is $77.
Trail Point Aquatics and Wellness will feature an eight-lane competition pool with bleachers seating 500, family and physical therapy pools, exercise and weight training studios and equipment, an elevated 1/10th of a mile track, three racquetball courts, two gyms, childcare services, and a coffee bar.
Blunck is excited for the prospect of what Trail Point Aquatics and Wellness has to offer. As somebody who loves on campus work with students, and who’s spent his whole life involved in recreation services, Bill Blunck thinks it’s important to “provide an environment where people learn growth and responsibility and sacrifice.”
This is where his visions of a “community hub” and an experience “like no other” come in. The rec center provides plenty of opportunity for all of that. It’s a place people can come with their families and friends to get in shape physically and mentally, build relationships, and have fun. Along with group exercise activities, they also offer opportunities to work with and receive lessons from personal trainers and certified swimming instructors.
Blunck also plans on providing opportunities for growth in more ways than just physically and socially. Trail Point will offer 75-100 part-time jobs, including lifeguards, personal trainers, and childcare providers in their on-site childcare services for people using the rec center.
