Over the weekends between November 15 and 24 in the Blackbox Theater, the DMACC Theatre program put on a production of “Swindlers: A True-ish Tall Tale.”

The play was written by Noah Diaz and was directed by Brittany Rebhuan. The story follows a girl named Marie who feeling stuck in her life is thrust into a dangerous road trip with her conman father to recover stolen goods.

Rehearsal for the production started on Oct. 13 and by the 10th tech week had begun.

Alex Mears, a third-year DMACC student and narrator of the play said, “The really fun night of the process is getting to know everybody. The first night of the rehearsal when we do the read-through is always so fun, and it was especially fun because we were doing ‘Swindlers.’” said Alex Mears a third-year DMACC student.

For Alex, the role of Context was a new opportunity. “It’s his story he is building it. He gets to pop in every now and then to say hello.”

The production was shown to a wide range of audience members and ticket prices were free. A comedic show at heart, “Swindlers” allowed its cast to flex their humorous acting chops, and forge connections along the way.

“It’s such a highlight watching people come together; if Alex is playing context and he does something funny or the other actors doing stuff that’s really fun. Seeing all that come together is just so fun,” said Sami Clark a second-year DMACC student and fellow castmate of Alex.

Her role in “Swindlers” is comedic friend Janine the main character’s best friend. “She is just kind of like the supportive best friend, I also like to say she kind of the character who peaked in high school. She calls herself a mess,” Clark said.

“Swindlers” is the second DMACC production for the fall semester and will be followed by the musical “Ride the Cyclone” this coming spring directed by Bryann Sweere. Spring audition times will be posted on the DMACC theater website. The show is set to be performed April 4-13. Contact the DMACC theatre department for more information.
