Opinion: The Democratic Convention brings excitement

I have enjoyed watching the Democratic National Convention the last few days there have been some very influential speakers and have been some great ideas brought forth. I am not someone who usually gets into politics but this year with the ticket of Walz and Harris two seemingly progressive normal people it is exciting to see what policies they can bring forth.

There have been a few speakers with whom I was genuinely impressed. The first was Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr who openly put forth his support of the Democratic ticket. “Nine days ago 12 incredible American men came together to win gold in Paris, I can not think of a better metaphor for what this country is all about than the way Team USA came together at the Olympics,” Kerr said.

“We had players from across our wonderful country, players who had fought and shed tears trying to beat one another throughout their careers joining forces to wear the Red White and Blue,” Kerr said.

“When we won the American flag raised to the rafters, the national anthem playing it was the proudest moment of my life,” Kerr said.

“I knew as soon as I was asked to speak tonight it was too important as an American citizen not to speak up in an election of this magnitude,” Kerr said.

“With Kamala Harris and Tim Walz they have devoted their lives to serving other people,” Kerr said.

I enjoyed his speech and like how he was able to bring people together as Americans regardless of their backgrounds and show that if everyone comes together our voices can be heard.

Another favorite speech of mine was Michelle Obama’s. She had power in her voice and her presence she controlled the stage and chose to talk about policy over hating the other candidate. “Regardless of where you come, from what you look like, who you love, how you worship, or what’s in your bank account we all deserve the opportunity to build a decent life,” Obama said. She did a great job in her speech reaching all Americans from all walks of life and telling them Kamala and Tim want everyone to have the same opportunity not just the wealthy.

Another great speaker and arguably the most likable guy on the ticket is Governor Tim Walz. He is a former social studies teacher high school football coach and 24-year military veteran. Walz was born in a small town in Nebraska and is the current governor of the great state of Minnesota. He comes from a small town and is a great contrast to Kamala who is from California. Walz can reach small communities and speak well to the middle and working class. “We’re all here tonight for one simple beautiful reason we love this country,” Walz said. “I grew up in Butte Nebraska a town of 400 people I had 24 kids in my high school class and none of them went to Yale,” Walz said. The way he can combine humor with a serious level of care and compassion for people from all walks of life is unlike any politician I have ever seen.

Finally, the acceptance speech of the Democratic nominee for President Kamala Harris was the “Icing on the cake.”

“The path that led me here was unexpected, to say the least but it’s not new to me,” Harris said. “As the eldest child I saw how poorly my mom was treated, she taught us to not complain about injustice but to do something about it that was my mother,” Kamala said. This speech was very moving she showed the world her background where she came from and multiple touching stories that the idea that everyone should have equal opportunity regardless of race, gender, or faith. “I accept your nomination for president of the United States,” she said.
