It’s every fashion major’s dream to go to New York City and experience city life, and this year their dreams come true.
Fashion major Jamie Moreno, from Des Moines, said, “I’ve always wanted to go to New York City, the city is so beautiful and I’ve always wanted to get to know the city and you get to see the most fashion there.”
On October 5 through the 7, DMACC fashion students held an NYC-style pop-up shop that had everything from designer to vintage apparel, jewelry, and art. The money raised during this pop-up event goes towards helping fashion major students pay for their 2021 New York City Tour Trip, which is $1600 per student. The Tour Trip is from October 10-15.
Fashion and Interior Design Professor Ann Gadbury said, “The purpose of this trip is to deepen and enrich students’ learning outside the classroom, thereby enhancing their chances to become strong and confident members of this industry upon graduation. Students are introduced to fashion industry leaders, allowing them to network and explore future internships and jobs. This opportunity enables them to acquire a competitive edge over their peers.”
Students will visit different fashion companies to learn the ins and outs of the business, such as the process of making clothing and understanding how to run a business.
Fashion students will have the opportunity to speak with professionals in the business. Students will also experience an internship seminar, assortment planning seminars, educational shopping trips in the city, a Broadway Show (Wicked), and current fashion exhibits.
The exhibits they plan to visit are, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion (The Met – Costume Institute) and Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams (Brooklyn Museum).
Fashion major Lexi Benton from West Des Moines said while waiting for the trip, “I’m really excited to go to Brooklyn and visit the vintage boutiques”.
