DMACC needs a “dead week” like ISU

Two weeks left in the semester my fellow DMACC students! Do you know what that means? That’s right, finals are coming up.

No worries though, we have this entire week to study, right?

Well, that isn’t exactly the case.

Believe it or not, many students are under pressure with numerous amounts of projects that are due this week. I know that I am certainly one of those people.

This week alone, I have three projects to do and I have an early finals test on Friday. I’m sure a lot of you are in the same boat as me. Unlike us busy DMACC students, the students from Iowa State University are currently on “dead week.”

What is “dead week?” Dead week is a special tradition at Iowa State in which professors are not allow to assign or make new homework due for the entire week before finals, in the thinking that students  will use that entire week to study for final exams. There are many colleges across America that also have this same tradition.

That sounds like a pretty good deal.

This begs me to ask the question, why don’t we have something like that here at DMACC?

If DMACC had a tradition like that, I would have more time to review, I would probably do better on my finals, and I would be much less stressed.

I believe that DMACC should adopt a “dead week” initiative so that we could take advantage of its perks and study harder in order to get a good grade on the finals, because for many of us, the final exams are going to be the ultimate difference maker when it comes to final grades and GPA.

It’s hard enough for the majority of DMACC students who either have families to take care of and/or have full/part time jobs to do, so why not give us a week off to have more time in our busy schedules to study?
