Dive into DMACC took place in Building 5 in Ankeny on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The annual event is a chance to show off campus resources, student clubs, and more. Here are some of the featured stands from the event.
DMACC Libraries
The DMACC library wanted to show that they are more than just books. Emma Adams (pictured right) says the DMACC library is for “finding things to enjoy for outside of class, and to be successful with projects inside class.” Students can check out many things, including movies, audiobooks, laptops, and even personal hotspots for internet access off-campus. Librarians can also help students with finding research sources for papers. The Ankeny campus library is located in Building 6.
Human Services Club
The human services club is all about helping the community. Club members do service-oriented activities and volunteer in the community. Annie Wood (pictured right) says the club has served the homeless, volunteered at many non-profits, organized food drives, and more. Students interested in joining can contact Annie Wood at akwoodlong@dmacc.edu for more information.
DMACC Honors Program
The DMACC honors program is the first of its kind at an Iowa community college. Through this 20-credit program, students can receive an honors degree upon graduation, as well as many other perks like early registration and tuition waivers for honors coursework. Students need a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and can apply regardless of major/discipline. To read the full requirements and apply, students can go to www.dmacc.edu/honors.
International Club
The main goal of the International Club, according to Roger Lugo (pictured) is to “provide some sense of belonging for international students”. This includes introducing students to American and Iowan culture through activities (such as ice skating and bowling). While international students are encouraged to join, the club welcomes students from all backgrounds.
Best Buddies
The Best Buddies program is an opportunity for able-bodied and intellectually or developmentally disabled students to create personal connections. Students are paired with a buddy in the community to spend time walking, swimming, or doing any activity of choice. More information can be found on the DMACC activities page or www.bestbuddies.org/iowa/friendship.
