Being this is the last newspaper of the semester it came across my mind, what does everyone do over the Christmas Holiday break. For me, it’s just back to the normal job stuff because I’m not a traditional student, but what should you be doing? I’ll take this from the perspective of my two daughters who are both in college, one here at DMACC, another at UNI.
What would I want them doing? Catching up on family time, catching up on fun stuff, preparing for the next semester and making some money.Catching up on family time – My first daughter lives on the DMACC campus. And I see her a couple of times a week, be it me coming her way or her coming my way in Grimes. But my other daughter is in Cedar Falls at college, and I don’t get to see her a lot. Catching up on family time – My first daughter lives on the DMACC campus. And I see her a couple of times a week, be it me coming her way or her coming my way in Grimes. But my other daughter is in Cedar Falls at college, and I don’t get to see her a lot. She was just back for Thanksgiving break and it felt good to have extra time with her, and to have her asking me for advice on things. But I’d like to just have total chill time with her even more. Your brothers, sisters, and parents want to see you and hear more about your adventures at college.Catching up on
Catching up on fun stuff – Sometimes you need just to hang with friends that you don’t see when you are away at college. You also need to do some binge watching of “Netflix and chill” as the phrase goes. Try to at least get a couple days of that in when you can.
Preparing for next semester – The majority of the readers of this column I assume are coming back to DMACC or continuing college somewhere for the spring semester. Make sure to get yourself organized in advance and if the teacher has specified your textbook yet, go ahead and buy it and get comfortable with the material. Spend a couple hours skim reading the whole book to see what you are up for. If it’s a literature class like I’m taking next semester, go ahead and do some of the reading in advance, or watch the movie version of the book like I did last semester.
Making some money – I firmly believe you shouldn’t go into debt for college. I’m not letting my daughters do such. As they are getting some money from me, some financial aid, and are working hard to pay the rest of college. DMACC doesn’t cost that much that you should be able to have a summer and school breaks job and cover your tuition. Get yourself a nice job doing something during the school year too. Nothing more than about 10-15 hours a week and you will find that you waste less time doing stupid stuff, and will get better grades because you value your time higher. In the end, enjoy the Christmas break and look forward to the spring semester, spring break, a little more classes then here comes summer!
