When it comes to movies there is one genre that serves as my guilty pleasure: monster movies. Even though I know they’re usually terrible, there’s something about watching giant monsters destroy cities and beat each other up that makes me happy.
In my opinion, these movies are at their best when they are dumb and weird. This creates the perfect balance of enough stupidity to let me turn off my brain, and enough weird monster action to keep my interest. One example that comes to mind is more recent “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.” The plot of the movie is lackluster, but seeing Godzilla team up with a giant moth and a giant pterodactyl to take down a three-headed dragon is weird enough to keep me interested.
This is why I can’t wait for the release of “Godzilla vs Kong.” As soon as I saw the trailer for this movie my interest peaked. Boring plot of humans trying to contain the monsters, check. Godzilla and King Kong battling it out on an aircraft carrier, yes please. King Kong using a giant axe to fight Godzilla, I’ll take two please. If the trailer is any indication of how the movie will be then this could be the magnum opus of monster movies; at least in my eyes.
The premise of this movie alone raises an interesting question. Who would actually win in a fight between Godzilla and King Kong? Now, this question has been debated by nerds for decades, but with the recent trailer release the internet has been once again debating who would actually win this fight. On one hand you have Godzilla, a giant radioactive lizard with an attitude problem. And on the other you have King Kong, a giant monkey that got really good at punching. I believe that these two are pretty evenly matched when it comes to a fight and choosing a winner would involve playing favorites. Furthermore, I think many fans feel the same way. A true fight between these two titans can only end with one of them meeting their untimely demise, which I can’t see the studio doing. This leads me to believe that the movie might go in a different direction, a team up.
A theory such as this has been circulating the internet lately as fans have been discussing the upcoming film. Given what we’ve seen thus far, as well as how these movies typically play out, it is very possible that the movie could go in this direction. Based on a brief glimpse in the trailers it is believed that Godzilla and King Kong could end up working together to take down an even greater threat, Mechagodzilla, a robot version of Godzilla that is armed to the teeth. Mechagodzilla has been a primary villain to Godzilla for years so his inclusion in the franchise is inevitable. This theory may just be wishful thinking but I for one would love to see it. Watching Godzilla and Kong take down a giant Godzilla robot that shoots lasers is everything I want out of a monster movie.
At this point in time, all fans can do is wait. We can make theories and predictions but nothing will be definitive until the film’s release. The film will debut on HBO Max on March 31 of this year and I for one can’t wait to see how things play out.
