Italy Trip: This spring, DMACC students have the chance to go on a week-long trip to Italy. The trip will be May 13-20 and stop in Rome, Florence and Venice. For more information, email Maria Cochran at mecochran@dmacc.edu, or attend meetings in Building 2, Room 12B from 12:15-12:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 or Monday, Oct. 15.

NASA Scholars: Three students from DMACCs Boone Campus are heading to NASA in October after being selected for the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program. NASA has chosen 319 community college students from across the country to participate. The three DMACC students are A.J. Steenhoek of Ankeny, Brandt Damman of Ames, and Ava Depping of Madrid. Students engage in a five-week online experience but the program’s highlight is four days at NASAs Langley Research Center in Virginia. While there students will connect with NASA engineers, tour the facilities, participate in a simulation and learn about future opportunities at NASA.

Lola’s Fine Kitchen, a Filipino restaurant in Ankeny, is now offering a 10 percent discount to DMACC students and staff with a valid ID. They center on fusion-style food that is “exotic yet familiar” according to their website.

Gubernatorial debate: As the midterm elections approach, two of three candidates for the next governor of Iowa have agreed on three debates during the month of October. The first is tonight on the DMACC Ankeny Campus from 7-8 p.m. It is not open to the public but will be livestreamed on desmoinesregister.com and broadcast by KCCI. Libertarian candidate, Jake Porter has been excluded from the debates, however is attempting negotiations, according to The Des Moines Register. The next two debates are 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Sioux City, and 8-9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21 in Davenport.

Drake articulation: Drake University recently signed an articulation agreement with Iowa community colleges; which made them the first private university to waive their general education requirements for qualifying students. Students are eligible for this opportunity if they have earned an associate’s degree from an Iowa community college, completed 60 semester hours and retained a 2.0 cumulative GPA. The agreement allows students to arrive at Drake with a junior status and avoids loss of credits in the transfer process. Additionally, Drake is offering new transfer scholarships; go to drake.edu for more information.

Sweden Year: As part of the Sweden Year program, DMACC art Professor Krista Wolter will teach two workshops on traditional Swedish painting in October. Learn the history of Dala horses and learn to paint one in Building 19, Room 20 on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 1-4 p.m.; or Friday, Oct. 26 from 2-5 p.m. If interested, registration is required. Mental Health Forum: The Des Moines Register will host a mental health forum with the three candidates for Iowa governor, in collaboration with Des Moines University on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 3-4:30 p.m. at the DMU campus. Candidates will present their positions on mental health and ideas for reform. Doors open at 2:30 and the event is free, but tickets are required. Find them at tickets.desmoinesregister.com.

Dental Program Recognized: In its annual evaluation of American colleges, universities and their programs, Washington Monthly magazine has ranked DMACCs Dental Assisting Program sixth in the nation in the Dental Assisting Category. The magazine said rankings were based on which schools offered high quality degrees and were affordable for students.  “DMACC is extremely pleased to be recognized nationally as a leader in dental education,” said Academic Dean of Health and Public Services, Arthur Brown.

Ankeny campus students are now able to rent bikes to use, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Visit the Campus Recreation Office in Building 5, across from Café X to get more information or rent a bike.
